Folate coenzymes play an important role in the metabolism of several amino acids, the constituents of proteins. The synthesis of the amino acid methionine from homocysteine requires a folate coenzyme and, in addition, vitamin B12. Tetrahydrofolic acid (L-Methylfolate) is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) – the molecules that carry genetic information in cells – and also in the formation of blood cells. Folates are therefore essential for normal cell division, proper growth and for optimal functioning of the bone marrow.

Its major function is the production of serotonin from the amino acid tryptophan in the brain and other neurotransmitters, and so plays a role in the regulation of mental processes and mood.
